Drink Nescafe instant coffee. No finer coffee flavor

What is it?

Definition

How it's used

Bold

To catch the eye

The use of bold colors and fonts throughout the ad helps the eye-catching: the logo of the company but also helps you know exactly what this ad is about. The text that is in bold help the reader know the important parts so as not to be overwhelmed by the ad as a whole

Enumeratio

Detailing parts of the argument

They detail why their instant coffee is the best by telling you its going to stay fresher longer and that you will save money using their coffee.

Intensifiers

Suggests strength of feeling

They use strong words to express how much better their coffee is

Climax

Increasing importance

The use of the pictures with Stamets of how there the flavor will always be there with their instant coffee will always be great no matter what and they end it with the reassurance that the flavor will be in your cup.

Focalizer

Pulls the eye

With the pretty woman in the middle of the ad is effortlessly making instant coffee she is the first thing you will see when you look at the ad but she isn't the main focus of the ad she is just there to catch your eye so you can read the small paragraph next to her that details the product. When you see this woman you imagine being her and then you read how easy it is to make it and then you're sold.

Flat: No Depth

Space: full

Eye-level

Realistic

The ad itself is flat and has no depth. The ad space is very full leaving little room for anything else and making it kinda busy and using realistic drawing to get a better idea of what it would like if you were making the coffee.

Hue:

Bright yellow

Bright red

Saturation:

High/ bright colors

The types of color and saturation used in the ad

The ad uses bright red and bright yellow to help pull the eye around the ad.

  1. You have done amazing work with your identifying skills and graph, but one suggestion I would make is to give a summary of what is actually happening in the image and what main ideologies are at play. This would be helpful to other readers! But again I think you did a beautiful and professional outline of your schemes and tropes. Well done!

  2. Hello! You've done some fantastic work so far! Your list is very thorough and detailed. It really shows how attentive you were to the different devices that were incorporated within your ad. One thing I would suggest adding to your chart is adding the main device that the sub-set devices you've noted fall under (ex. Bold falls under Style in the section titled 'Type'). It might add a bit more information for both yourself and your audience. One more suggestion I have is to possibly write a short summary that includes some context about your ad. and maybe elaborate on how your recognized devices contribute towards your ad. and its mission towards appealing and persuading potential buyers. Other than that, this is excellent work! Good luck!

  3. Hi Blair,
I really liked everything you identified. Right off the bat it caught my attention about the face being used as a pretty woman to attract readers. I wish there was a scheme or trope section about exclamation points because you definitely could have identified that in your ad. Because your ad does have quite a bit of text I would try and find more tropes and schemes through out the text. I can’t read most of the text on the ad because it is blurry, but I would identify those red words on the right as epistrophe and or enumeritao.

  4. Hiya! Looking at how you have composed this, I say bravo! The Ad is an immediate attention getter, better even with the notations at the side at just the right size and colour so as to not divert attention too much. Your list was organized in such a clean way, easy to read and navigate. I will say, perhaps different colours for the arrows in the ad, as they tend to blur a bit with the colour of the fonts.
