Toolbox (Fair Immigration Reform Movement)

These cloth signs were made for a rally for FIRM (fair immigration reform movement) with other political organizations to promote against congress to #defundhate, a hashtag movement that symbolizes the Congress funding aggressive immigration enforcement. The color of the words on these signs are what stands out most. The use of these words on the cloth are what emphasize Burkes acceptance frame, the epic frame. This quote saying ‘families belong together’ promotes their belief that families are made to be kept together, and cherished as a whole. Their families have been torn apart over decades due to America’s immigration policy.

Within this Epic Frame, the people altogether are a whole and have to face against the ‘bad guy’ which is congress. The people that are fighting against congress have come together in this epic frame to try and overcome their struggle, thus the social movement. Throughout this movement, the people under FIRM are seeking courage and hope to prevail over the bad guy in order to accomplish what the movement is about. The idea of Congress wanting to install immigration policy sets the stage for the whole idea that they are trying to tear apart families. Congress doesn’t explicitly say they are trying to rip apart families, but their policy being set in place can be an assumption that leads to that idea. Because of this, we are able to interpret their goal as inhumane, which develops their perception as being the bad guy.
