Speaking Outline for That First Train Ride

Attention Getter: Have you ever wanted to get away on a train with just you and your kid, and you don’t have to pay anything? Try getting a cheap husband.

Thesis: I don’t like the fact that the husband sends his family on a trip without him, and the fact that they are advertising that the train ride is free on women’s day. This ad leans more towards children. When you are a child everything about your first anything is exciting. Which is why it is highlighted and bolded at the top. As you can see in the ad, there is a lot of food and entertainment. For this ad we are going to be looking at schemes, tropes, visuals, and type, and the typical train ride involving a daughter and mother.

Part 1: Schemes

Assonance-There’s a lot of O sounds

Antithesis- The ad talks about young people and the throws in old people, when there is no old people in sight.

Part 2: Tropes

Anthypophora - The question that it asks was, “Remember yours? that feeling of importance when the conductor asked how you were enjoying the trip…the thrill of sitting next to the car window where that wonderful scenery was your very own? Then it goes straight into advertising Union Pacific Railroad.

Part 3: Visual

Saturation - The red in this picture is very vivid

Value – Middle value

Hue - There is a lot of colors but the colors that stick out the most is the orange and the red, But the red is more eye catching.

High Contrast-You see a lot of dark shadows surrounding all the figures in the picture.

Medium Shots-You can see the top half of their bodies and their heads

High Angle- Yes, imagine if we were their waiter or waitress.

Part 4: Type

Bold-At the top of the article where it says, "UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD"

Italic-The title, “That first train ride”

hmnu (aperture)- The overall text

Conclusion: Kids are crazy about food and entertainment. It is too bad he isn’t there with them. “That first train ride,” makes it sound like it's a huge deal to everyone, when in reality, it’s not. The father wants to put his family on a train without him because maybe he either wants to be alone with his mistress and that’s why he sent them away, he thinks his child and his wife needs a vacation.

  1. I think you have the basic concept of how the speech is going to be laid out but, the attention getter is a bit wordy. I understand what you're trying to say but the intro must leave the audience questioning what you're about to say. There may not be enough time to address all of this in the introduction alone. Also, in the conclusion, I like that you are adding more content to the speech but if it is important enough to mention in the conclusion, maybe its important enough to mention in the body and use what you've found in the ad to back it up! You are off to a great start and I cant wait to see where you take it from here.
