Ad Analysis #14 - Rohnan Mech

  1. so I think this ad is definitely appealing to the nerdy gamer guys because it would make no sense for this ad to be targeting young athletes who sit around all day and drink mountain dew. so with all of the sports equipment around the room throws us off a little, but with a weird looking chair, the guy sitting close to the tv with a gaming system in a small dark room really just screams nerdy gamer dude that more than likely only has online friends.

  2. I think with the handful of contradictions you pointed out in your analysis could perhaps lead you to maybe arguing that this mountain dew ad isn't quite effective as it wants to be. I agree with your take that how could one have all these friends playing videogames all day, when online party chats weren't even a thing at the time. The association with mountain dew and gaming is a real thing, but I'm not sure how effective it's really displayed using a fit guy and telling you to make friends. It's like they didn't fully commit to the obvious stereotype that is known.

  3. This isn't the best ad because it seems to be directed toward guys who play video games, but it has sports stuff on the floor, and he is playing a snowboarding game. It could be saying that if you want to stay inside and play games all day then if you drink mountain dew then you will never get tired due to the mountain dew looking like batteries that are “powering” him.

  4. Through this advertisement Mountain Dew is relying one hundred percent on stereotypes. Often times social groups enjoyed being identified by the norm or stereotype they have established. For this advertisement said group is the gamer group. This ad is recognizing and embellishing gamers in order to appeal to the ‘coolness’ or social superiority they represent. By doing so Mountain Dew employs gamers to buy more Mountain Dew in order to belong to the idolized gamer stereotype.

  5. This ad is really reaching. There is so much going on that I don't think it really has one specific target audience. There are so many different sports mentioned in this ad like basketball, skateboarding, snowboarding, and "gaming" (some people call it a sport--lol). I believe that MD is really trying to make it an ad for all those types of people but what kind of person is going to say, "I'd really like a Mountain Due after basketball practice."? Odds are they're going to go for the water. I think it gives gamers a false sense that they could be sporty too, but if you're playing video games about sports it's not the same.

  6. I think Mountain dew is honestly trying to advertise to teenage boys and all the activities they partake in. I understand the confusion of having the sports gear yet he's inside playing video games and I interpreted it as a kid coming inside to take a break from his outdoor activities. And what better way then to relax and recharge then to drink Mountain Dew. I also don't think they are saying make friends by soley playing online games but to make friends and also play online games and while you do both things to drink Mountain Dew.

  7. This advertisement is definitely not a successful one. The ad displays a super tan, fit guy sitting in a dark room gaming all day. The ad claims that if you play online games and drink “MD” you’ll be happy. However, people who drink Mountain Dew all day and play games inside are not typically healthy nor happy. Thus this advertisement fails to properly appeal to it’s market.

  8. Mountain Dew is mainly advertising to people who play a lot of video games. They are assuming that these players have no friends and don't go outside. But if they drink Mountain Dew, they will become "powered by the dew" and will have friends, look tan, and be the best at video games. Since the ad seems to be advertising toward a specific group, it doesn't make any sense to me to have a basketball and a skateboard on the floor. I don't think that the people they are advertising to would be into that kind of stuff.
