Day 38.5.5: Toolbox Data Blog Post- Gezi Park Protests

The Gezi Park protest was a series of days where Turkish environmentalists camped in the park to show their disapproval of the plans to build an Ottoman era military barrack with a shopping mall inside where the park was located. on the 31st of May, 2013, the municipal police burnt down the tents of the camping protesters and used excessive force against them, including pepperspraying unarmed protesters from close range. From this event multiple images and art pieces emerged, like these images of The Lady in Red, a symbol of the protest. In the original picture the woman is seen standing still and passively as a policeman surges towards her wielding pepperspray. The Turkish words in the artistic recreation are translated to "Memory of Resistance", making the police officer look small to the brave, tall woman.

Burkean Frame- Heroic:
The first toolbox I thought of what Burkes Frames, especially the heroic frame. "This frame features a noble person or group struggling against great odds. The general roles of “good guy” and “bad guy” are usually easy to recognize in this frame." (Burke's Concepts) The main goals of this frame is to build courage and promote individual sacrifice for group advantage, which is precisely what The Lady in Red is doing.
