My First Barbie

  1. It is very clear that Barbie is meant to be idolized as the perfect girl. As you mentioned the girl holds the Barbie very carefully in a position to glorify her. Ads like this is where the ideology of woman's perfect body image start; how could a girl not beg her parents for this "perfect" toy.

  2. In this advertisement, Barbie is presented as an idolized object. This idolization is shown by the emotions in the mother and daughter's faces as they both gaze longingly at the Barbie. Ads like this are potentially problematic, for they tell their audience it is okay to idolize unrealistic body types.

  3. So many white and blond humans. This is not a bad thing as far as physicality goes, but because the humans are and the Barbie also is connects with the beauty standards thing. All American, apple pie, lemonade, heterosexual, blonde, long-legged lasses are what we want. Obvs. The little girl is literally enthralled with the unrelaitic body and look of Barbie and the mother is enthralled with her daughter's enthrallment. This can represent the female/mother-daughter/woman-to-woman cycle in the patriarchy that is oppressive in the way that mothers want to create mini selves in their children from times that were not exactly progressive.
