Fallacies: The Big Book of Texas Ghost Stories - Austin and San Antonio Hotels

Term

Definition

Example

Cum Hoc

Two things that happened at the same time must have a causal relationship.

Cold spots or people just getting cold when there were thoughts or possible sightings of ghosts.

Texas Sharpshooter

Causal attributions are made about a cluster you analytically create. But the clustering effect may be chance or another cause.

2 women see someone with a lot of shopping bags struggling to get into her room and connect it back to the woman who killed herself in the same hotel, who had shopping bags and struggled to get into the room. This is just a very realistic coincidence in my opinion.

Bandwagon

A popular idea is correct.

They think they see more ghosts after going on a ghost story in the very hotel they are staying at.

Hasty Generalization

A conclusion is drawn from too small a sample of evidence.

Strange noises, smell of rubbing alcohol(???), touched during sleep….GHOSTS!!!
