Toolbox for Free the Nipple

Ideograph- Idiographic aspects of the FTN movement are found mostly in the actions and signs that are used to promote the movement itself. “Free the Nipple” in itself is an ideograph for it’s movement, and it is the actual name for it as well. But just ‘freeing the Nipple’ does not reflect the messages and goals that are meaning to be sent from the people supporting the movement. A few big goals of this movement are destroying rape culture, promoting public breast-feeding, equality between men and women, and desexualizing the female breast and nipple. So, “free the nipple” does not seem to encompass all of these goals, but it is a bold statement and name used for a bold movement, and that’s what is needed to enforce invigorating rhetoric and methods of persuasion promoting this movement.

Cyborg- How does this movements rhetoric reflect it’s messages? Well, many of the slogans like “free the nipple” or “still not asking for it” or “Stop sexualizing our bodies” seem somewhat vague in comparison to what this movement claims to enforce. In a very forceful and ‘to the point’ way, these messages definitely promote the more abnormal goals of this movement like rape culture and equality, but the breastfeeding aspect of this movement is not as common in this movements actions, even though it is an important piece of the FTNM.
