I originally chose this ad because it seemed like it would be simple. This was proven wrong as I began asking myself what the hell I was looking for and trying to explain my choices without stretching to a conclusion. Like do I need to point out the subtle racist mannerisms displayed by separating the white and brown eggs? Why have everything else covered BUT the whole untouched cooked chicken?
It drove me insane. Why did she pour a bowl full of cereal, begin pouring milk, and then stop? I think the message would've been better had the milk still been pouring (despite the gross ratio of cereal to milk being displayed.)
In my opinion what was used (for its time) works in its setting, as a contemporary ad, no.

Cereal Ad Blog Post :What Makes It Work?

Trinity Murdock

#12

Frosted Flakes are my favorite cereal, I have tried to be completely unbiased. There are definitely rhetorical strategies used throughout this ad. Does that make it a good ad, after looking at it and analyzing the table, they put a lot into making it look simple and structured. Gotta give them credit for that, and they stayed on brand. I rated it seven out of 10 in my personal scale of ad efficiency below is my analysis.

Cereal Ad

Tropes: Substitution

They substitute the word terrific by changing the beginning of it to “Tiger-riffic” to support their mascot Tony the Tiger.

Type: Bold

The wording in this ad uses bold letters to make the letters pop out in comparison to the orange background above.

Type: Spacing

The spacing from word to word is normal.

Type: Ratio

The “Tiger-riffic for breakfast” is much larger than the rest of the lettering to make it stand out for a catch phrase.

Visual: Hue

The colors stand out from one another because the bright orange makes the black stripes everywhere stand out significantly.

Visual: High Contrast

The orange is very vibrant which makes the black lettering and the stripes on the spoon stand out versus if the contrast was low.

Visual: Balanced

The image is symmetrical and is not taken from the side.

Visual: Focalizers

Makes the eyes look everywhere on the image because of the stripes that are used and makes the cereal box stand out at the top right corner because of the orange background.

Visual: Representationality

The ad does a good job of making sure the viewer knows what the mascot is by implementing the tiger in two different spots and the stripes on the spoon sticking out of the cereal.
