You seem to be onto the fact that they are using different tactics to drum up their credibility. In the story, it also mentions that the person that saw it was usually one not to be scared, but he was in this situation. I think that could be something you follow up on and see if it yields you extra ammo for your argument. Also just grasping, but maybe the fact they took the time to mention they were in the middle of nowhere could help convince people this is the correct setting for a bigfoot habitat.
