The Indians of All Tribes Movement was founded in 1969 by American Indian student activists from California Richard Oakes, Lanada Warjack and John Trudel. In 1969, a group of 103 American Indians from multiple tribes occupied the island of Alcatraz - once a federal penitentiary - for 19 months in order to protest about stolen lands, denial of cultural heritage, amongst other issues surrounding American Indian communities in the United States.
