Slideworks Free the Nipple

These aren’t all of my slides

Outline Free the Nipple

What- campaign enforcing male and female equality, and de-sexualizing the female breast and nipple (Breastfeeding, elimination of rape culture… “asking for it”)

Why- seeks out change in the law and social norm of women being topless.“If men are able to exist in a public space while being topless; devoid of judgement or violation of law, then why can’t women exist while being topless in the same way (without judgement or violation of law)?”

interchangeable answers because it is not universal for everyone

Goals- obtaining a non-sexual perception of the female nipple by enforcing the normalcy of exposed female breasts/toplessness, promoting public breastfeeding and eliminating rape culture

I know this from… signs, protest interviews and an academic journal

Many supporters of the FTNM are not just wishing to ‘go around topless’

Goals are shaded by the boldness of members- unforgiving demeanor, not what many people who support the movement agree with

Scales of movement

Idea- calls itself a campaign, protests and social media

Radicality- not known for violence, arrests, civil disobedience and violation of law to make point-

Organization- social media presence and websites dictates, not tyranny (no revolutionists leading) celebrities persuade people into being more accepting of the FTNM

Demands- non-sexual perception of the female nipple by enforcing the normalcy of exposed female breasts/toplessness, equality between men and women, promoting public breastfeeding and eliminating rape culture and the fallacy that a woman is “asking for it” depending on her clothing/nudity- but these are unclear because of misinterpretation on supporting and non supporting sides

Ideographs- ! “Free the Nipple'' itself -just ‘freeing the nipple’ does not reflect the messages and goals that are meant to be sent from the people supporting the movement.

Gotopless.org uses “free the breast, free the mind” as an ideograph symbolizing its movement, and connection with “free the mind” from claiming to have a spiritual leader of the movement itself…

Values- are used to promote the campaign of FTN, and used frequently in signs, protests and social media as universal truths

based on equality, change of social norms, change of laws, destruction of rape culture and promotion of public breastfeeding

innately pushing participants in the movement to act upon these values, leads them into believing that their actions are justified

Abstract Values- promoting change and in a way, a revolution, not concrete because it is not using people or an object to build it’s values upon, and it is not  ‘unique’ because the values it uses are claimed by members to already be universal.

Comparison- compare itself to the seeming normalcy of men being able to exist freely/without consequence in public while being topless. Good job of comparing the realities for men and for women when it comes to toplessness, but— this assertion is mainly a claim born from the movement, holding more power than it would alone because it is connected so deeply with the FTNM.

Thesis- core values of the FTNM are in some ways used as a method of persuading people to take actions for the movement that they normally would not commit to by themselves… protests,

Example breastfeeding support- misconception that breasts are not meant for babies,

signs and protesters claim bodies and boobs aren’t sexual, but they can be if that’s what someone with boobs would like.

support the implied values and goals of the Free the Nipple movement, but some of the methods and beliefs should be open for dispute rather than condemned to the pre-disclosed opinions that the FTNM was built upon.

2000s Feminist Anti war speaking outline

 Attention getter

  • President Bush's ultimatum after 9/11 was  'If you're not with us, you're against us'

Introduction

  • After 9/11 the United States was in a dark place. After losing almost 3,000 Americans. Bush was ready for revenge so After the attack and the country to head into the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that have killed over 7,000 troops to date. But there are some colorful and lovely ladies fighting to bring it to an end from the beginning. During this time 2 feminist anti-war groups were formed. The raging grannies and  the missile dicks chicks

Thesis:

  • Both organizations were built on wanting to stand out and make a statement.  The leaders of these movements want to challenge stereotypes placed on women and fight for what they believed as an unjust war. Their use of rhetorical schemes, tropes, and visuals help set their movement apart from the rest.

Preview:

  • Today we will look at how these organizations The raging grannies, the missile dicks chicks ,. created performance activism that breaks the normal stereotypes placed on women in today's society.

Credibility:

  • I have been studying voomans charts for a semester and I'm ready to start summer

Idea

The idea behind these protests is that they all want the wars overseas to stop and they are using different social norms and breaking them to play into how people think they should behave to get a reaction

Radicality

Overall most of their protests were peaceful with a few arrests

Organization

All of the organization that went into forming these three groups where just ladys that were tired of not being heard and most of them are long time advocates for peace

Demands

There demands in the beginning of the organization where clear now and it was the opposition to the iraq war but it doesn't seem to me like they have a mission they are just active in the community

Slutwalk outline

 Introduction

Attention getter

Slut-Noun-Disparaging and Offensive. a person, especially a woman, who is sexually promiscuous.

Synonyms-hooker, whore, mammy, mule, sapphire, hoe, tramp, skank

History

  • The Slut Walks movement started in  2011
  • “I've been told I'm not supposed to say this.
  • Since the first walk in April of 2011 in Toronto there have been hundreds of slutwalks that happened in Canada, United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Thesis

The slutwalk movement was successful with bringing awareness to rape culture and victium blaming. Even though the Slutwalks had good intentions it lacked in incorporating all races and ethnicities of women and for this reason the rhetoric of bringing “slut” back and revamping the term is not working for but against the movement.

Preview

  • I will be looking at three different sources through schemes and tropes, Parlem and Tyteca charts, fallacies, and rhetoric theories. The three sources that will be looked at today are the London Slutwalk advertisement poster, a protest sign, and a letter written from the Black Women blueprint to the Slutwalk movement.

Credibility

  • I am someone who has been in Vrooman class for the last few months in Vroomans class learning the different rhetorical schemes, fallacies, and concepts that gave me the ability to analis this social movement.

Conclusion

The Slutwalk movement has been instrumental in bringing awareness to rape culture and victium blaming. It started a conversation that women wanted and needed to have about their experience being sexually assaulted. The movement spread quickly and has continued to grow. However, it has yet to incorporate black women in their decision making leaving little to no space for them within the movement. The rhetoric of the term “slut” as much as they wanted to take control of the word and bring a new narrative to it failed to see how destructive this could be for women of all races and ethnicities who need to be incorporated in the movement for it to be fully successful. Growth for some women is not good enough anymore.
